The WSET® courses are popular worldwide and being offered in over 47 countries, and well recognized in Hong Kong by both people in the trade as well as consumers. All courses will be taught by qualified and experienced WSET® Educators. Unless specified, teaching of the courses will be in Cantonese supplemented, while course materials and exams will be in English.

For individuals new to wine study, this qualification provides a hands-on introduction to the world of wine. You’ll explore the main types and styles of wine through sight, smell, and taste, while also gaining the basic skills to describe wines accurately, and make food and wine pairings. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.

The Level 1 Award is an entry level qualification providing a straightforward introduction to wine. It is ideal for boosting the confidence of new or inexperienced front line staff in the hospitality and retail sectors. It is also a great course for those wanting to know the main grape varieties and food and wine matching.

This course is suitable for:

  • Wine consumers wanting to know more about the main grape varieties and food and wine matching.
  • New and inexperienced staff in hospitality and retail sectors.

This 6 hour course will cover the following topics:

  1. The main styles of wine
  2. WSET® Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting and sampling of 8 different wines
  3. The characteristics of the common grape varieties used to produce wine
  4. Service of wine
  5. The matching of food and wine
  6. Health, safety and legal issues

Requirements to gain the qualification are:

  • Complete a multiple choice exam paper of 30 questions in 45 minutes and answered at least 70% correctly
  • Complete a food and wine matching exercise
  • Complete a portfolio of tasting notes

Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits

WSET L2

For individuals seeking a core understanding of wines, this qualification explores the major grape varieties and important wine regions in which they are grown. You’ll learn about the styles of wines produced from these grapes as well as key classifications and labelling terminology. A basic overview of the key categories of spirits and liqueurs will also be provided. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin, and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

This qualification offers broad coverage of all product categories in the field of alcoholic drinks, together with the theory of tasting technique. It is suitable for those with little previous experience. This qualification provides further information about viticulture and vinification, major grapes throughout the World, wine classification systems and broad range tasting experience and their production in wines and spirits.

This course is suitable for:

  • Wine enthusiasts who wish to acquire in-depth knowledge of wines and spirits and want to obtain an internationally recognised wine qualification.
  • People employed in the drinks and hospitality industries with little previous knowledge of alcoholic beverages

This 18 hour course is designed for people who wish to acquire in-depth knowledge of wines and spirits and will cover the following topics:

  1. Wine styles and food and wine matching
  2. WSET® Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting and sampling of 48 different wines
  3. Production of wine
  4. Wine law and understanding label terminology
  5. Major grape varieties
  6. Major wine regions
  7. Sweet wines
  8. Sparkling wines
  9. Fortified wines
  10. Spirits

Requirement to gain the qualification is:

  • Complete a multiple choice exam paper of 50 questions in 60 minutes and answered at least 55% correctly
  • Minimum tasting of 48 different wines and spirits

Level 3 Award in Wines

For individuals seeking a core understanding of wines, this qualification explores the major grape varieties and important wine regions in which they are grown. You’ll learn about the styles of wines produced from these grapes as well as key classifications and labelling terminology. A basic overview of the key categories of spirits and liqueurs will also be provided. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin, and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

The Level 3 Award in Wines gives more comprehensive coverage of the wines of the world, with an increased focus on tasting technique. It is designed to give a thorough understanding of the factors that account for the style, quality and price of the principal still, sparkling and fortified wines of the world. The qualification will assist those who are required to make professional evaluations of wines with regards to their style, quality and price.

This course is suitable for:

  • People employed in the drinks and hospitality industries in a supervisory capacity, needing core information to advise management and customers with authority and make informed selections of wines and spirits.
  • Wine enthusiasts who wish to acquire in-depth knowledge of wines and spirits and want to obtain an internationally recognized wine qualification.

The coverage of this 40 hours course includes:

  1. WSET® Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting and sampling of at least 84 different wines
  2. Natural and Human factors in the vineyard that influence style, quality and price.
  3. Human factors in the winery that influence style, quality and price
  4. The principal still wine producing regions of the world
  5. Principal sparkling wines of the world
  6. Principal fortified wines of the world
  7. Wine serivce, common wine Faults, Principles of food and wine matching, Social and health issues

To gain the qualification, one must successfully pass two exam units:

  • Unit One – Theory paper with 50 multiple choice questions and 4 short written questions to be completed in 2 hours. A candidate is required to achieve a minimum mark of 55% on EACH part to pass this unit
  • Unit Two – Blind tasting of TWO wines and produce an analysis using the WSET® Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting in 30 minutes. A minimum mark of 55% is required in order to pass this unit

Level 1 Award in Sake

For individuals new to the subject, this qualification offers a hands-on introduction to the world of sake. You’ll explore the main styles and types of sake through sight, smell and taste to develop an understanding of the key factors affecting flavours and aromas. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.


Level 3 Award in Sake

WSET L3

For individuals seeking to develop their expertise in sake, this qualification will provide you with a detailed understanding of the production methods that affect the style, quality and price of sake. Upon completion you will be able to assess sakes accurately, and use this information and your understanding of sakes to make authoritative recommendations. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin, and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

WSET Level 3 Award in Sake is targeted for students who want to learn about the various production methods and their impact on style quality and price. Students will also taste a wide range of styles, many of which are rarely available outside of Japan to reinforce their learning, build their tasting skills and ability to assess Sake. This course combines classroom and online study

What level of knowledge will I need to start this course?

There is no prior learning in the subject required to enter the programme, however, students will be required to complete a monitored online study programme which will commence two weeks before attending the classroom based element of the course. All the study materials for this course are available online.

Exam

The WSET Level 3 in Sake examination is in two parts; a blind tasting of 2 sakes and a written theory examination. Both parts require a pass grade in order to be awarded the Level 3 Award in Sake. The examination duration is 2 hours and 15 minutes.
